Cutting horses date back to the 17th century when ranchers in the American West hired cowboys to work herds of cattle out on the open range. Certain horses specialized in sorting and separating individual cattle from the herd when needed. Cutting horses became an indispensable tool of the trade. Cutting horses eventually moved from the open range to modern arena competition. Cowboys and cowgirls with the highest level of horsemanship skills and cutting horse training abilities merged with sophisticated breeding programs to create the most athletic, flexible, gritty, and “cowy” horses ever. Both horsemanship and cutting horse training has continued to evolve, and the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) now represents one of the most competitive equine sports in the world.
